Food vs. the Sword - Which Would You Choose?

Do you remember those old school debate topics like What’s more powerful—the pen or the sword? After this week’s podcast episode, I found myself pondering a twist on that theme: What’s more powerful—food or the sword? And I know exactly which side I’m on.

This week, I spoke with Anna Voloshyna—Ukrainian cookbook author, culinary advocate, and one of the most courageous women I’ve had the honor of interviewing. Our conversation reshaped how I think about food in times of crisis.

Anna shared how, in the midst of war, Ukraine is undergoing a culinary renaissance. Yes, you read that right. While the world may associate war with destruction, Ukrainians are using food as a form of resistance, identity, and joy. Traditional recipes are being reclaimed, and chefs across the country are boldly experimenting with modern interpretations of Ukrainian cuisine. It’s a celebration of culture, even in the darkest times.

Anna puts it plainly: “People are feasting together because they don’t know if they’ll be able to tomorrow.” That hit me hard.

She doesn’t just talk about the power of food—she lives it. Anna travels from western Ukraine to the frontlines, collecting ingredients and cooking for soldiers. These aren’t basic rations. These are deeply thoughtful, love-filled meals that remind each person of home.

This episode is a moving, insightful listen about food as a weapon of hope, resilience, and resistance. Anna is a force—raising funds, cooking under fire, and holding onto joy with both hands.

If you believe, as I do, that food can change the world—this one’s for you.
